Executive Function
Executive Function skills control how a person manages their everyday life, specifically how they set and meet goals. They allow a person to effectively plan and prioritize, and to adjust as conditions change.
Some of the key areas of executive function include:
Organization
Time Management
Planning & Prioritizing
Task Initiation
Sustained Attention
Cognitive Flexibility
Self-monitoring
If you or your child struggle to follow through on goals you’ve set, or even to set them in the first place, Executive Function Coaching can help!
Executive Function Coaching for minors/students:
If any of these are familiar to you, coaching can help:
Your child thinks they don’t have any homework, but only because they don’t yet have a good system to keep track of their work.
Your child knows what they need to do, but can’t seem to get started on any individual assignment.
Your child is able to begin assignments, but can’t sustain their attention to finish a task.
Your child can complete simple assignments, but gets overwhelmed when they need to tackle a bigger project or task.
Coaching begins with a group meeting including the student and parents/guardians. Together we will identify target areas, which may include gathering and organizing assignments, how to begin an assignment/project, how to maintain focus during a long or challenging task, and more. Then, I will work directly with the student on specific strategies to address those goals. Group meetings to assess and revise goals will happen monthly. While I recommend planning for three months of weekly sessions as a guideline for building the skills your child needs to make meaningful change, we will assess your specific situation in our first session and determine what makes the most sense for you! The ultimate goal is for your child to build the skills they need to be successful independently and to no longer need coaching services!
Executive Function Coaching for adults:
If any of these are familiar to you, coaching can help:
You know you have a lot to do, but you’re not sure what the specific tasks are - only that you feel overwhelmed by them.
You have a task list and know what you need to do, but can’t seem to get started on any individual task.
You’re able to begin the tasks on your list, but you can’t seem to cross the finish line.
You are able to knock off the simple tasks on your list, but anything that takes more than 1-2 steps has you frozen and unsure where to begin.
Coaching begins with an assessment of your current Executive Function skills and what you’re hoping to achieve through our work together. Then, we will work through strategies and how they fit with your specific experiences and skills, with the goal of improving your daily experiences. While I recommend planning for three months of weekly sessions as a guideline for building the skills you need to make meaningful change, we will assess your specific situation in our first session and determine what makes the most sense for you! The ultimate goal is for you to build the skills needed to be successful independently and to no longer need coaching services!
